The National Association of Home Builders recently conducted a survey of architects, designers and manufacturers, asking about future home trends. Some trends that emerged from the responses include:



  • Smaller average home sizes

  • Higher ceilings; in the average home, 9-10 feet and in luxury homes, 12 feet

  • More upscale amenities

  • Formal living rooms will virtually disappear, while family rooms will be larger

  • Low-maintainance exteriors

  • Recessed lighting and bolder colors

  • More energy-efficient appliances, mechanical equipment and windows
